The introduction of a new IP protocol (named IPv6) has been planned for years now. Since 1997 we have know-how in IPv6.

much more address space is availabe: 128 bit instead of 32 bit. On use of the the Global Aggregated Unicast address scheme, as described in RFC 2374, there are about 500,000 addresses per sqare kilometer available based on this calculation.

extended mechanisms are available to increase the security during the data transfer (IPsec: Authentication and Encryption).

the flexibility in routing is much higher than today (hierarchical routing, mobility).
